"Never Wanna Let You Go" Original Song by Megan Nicole

YouTube cover artist, Megan Nicole

Hello JUKEBOXERS!! This week's Wednesday review is not on a cover, but an original song by one of YouTube's famous cover artists: Megan Nicole.

Megan was born and raised in Texas. In fourth grade, she discovered her vocal talents while fidgeting with her family's karaoke machine. She was also introduced to the piano around this age and eventually used this skill in her church's youth group. As a freshman in high school, Megan was determined to learn another instrument- guitar. Her father encouraged her to post covers on YouTube after a video of her singing at a wedding that was originally intended for family sharing gained some extra views. She posted her first cover in December of 2009, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon. She worked with Kurt Schneider to produce a music video for her first original song, "B-e-a-utiful", released in July of 2011. Now she has almost 2.5 million subscribers. She is managed by Ron Cerrito at Prospect Park and has a record deal with Bad Boy/Interscope Records.
The best part of this song would be the lyrics. Unfortunately, Megan needs to work on her enunciation because, just to give an example, I didn't even know she was singing "tell me how it ought to be right now" until I looked up the lyrics. I'll post the lyrics at the bottom along with her first original song, "B-e-a-utiful" which I personally think is better than this song. In addition, I feel like the verses and the chorus came from two different songs. And the pre-chorus doesn't do its job as a transition from verse to chorus, but the transition from chorus to verse (also the intro to the song), which is a really simple chord progression on electric guitar, serves as a perfect way to return to the verse. The song maintains a more unified sound after the second verse. Also, I had trouble hearing her in general because the accompaniment drowns out her voice. Let's go back to the lyrics. I appreciate these words because they, like so many songs out there express a feeling that so many people experience- unrequited love. The music video is really creative and cute, much like her personality.

Here is the official music video:

And here are the lyrics:
Quit playing games, don't lead me on
Make me feel, like I'm your one
When you're gonna let me go

Why won't you give me a chance
To show you every side of me
And how we're meant to be

'Cause you're too scared to let me in
Let this love begin

Never wanna let you go, never wanna be alone
Tell me how it ought to be right now
Never wanna leave your side, never wanna say goodbye
Tell me how it ought to be right now

I see the way you look at her
The way you used to look at me
Now I can finally see

Broken hearts and broken dreams
There will never be a you and me
Can't find the air to breathe

'Cause you're too scared to let me in
Let this love begin

Never wanna let you go, never wanna be alone
Tell me how it ought to be right now
Never wanna leave your side, never wanna say goodbye
Tell me how it ought to be right now

'Cause I'm falling, do you still care?
'Cause I'm falling, will you be there?

Never wanna let you go, never wanna be alone
Tell me how it ought to be right now
Never wanna leave your side, never wanna say goodbye
Tell me how it ought to be right now

Never wanna let you go, never wanna be alone
Tell me how it ought to be right now
Never wanna leave your side, never wanna say goodbye
Tell me how it ought to be
Tell me how it ought to be right now

Her first original song, "B-e-a-utiful"
