Lorde or Ella Yelich-O'Connor |
Hey guys, Lia here with an alternative music review!
And it's Lorde, because she's the Queen of Alternative music and everyone needs to get educated fast because I drive around with the radio on and the only Lorde songs that play are "Royals" and "Team," which actually slightly annoys me because she has other songs that are way better (but maybe less catchy)!
Lorde is a New Zealand based singer/songwriter that became known for her creative music and poetic lyrics. She's only released one full album, Pure Heroine, but she already has two Grammy's under her belt. Her mother, Sonja Yelich, is actually a prize-winning poet, which is maybe where she got her poetic streak.
I listen to Lorde because she mellows me out, and "A World Alone" in particular does that and has lyrics that I can relate to. She talks about the kind of isolation that I experience, the kind that comes from being mediocre, that comes from a place of low self-esteem and empty nights alone. When I listen to this song, I feel nostalgic because she reminds me of who I was when I was younger. I've always been a bit strange in comparison to others so I totally get the chorus of the song. Because it's true. Sometimes, people do talk. Sometimes, your best friends are the only refuge you have. And sometimes, it's nice to hear someone like Lorde, someone so out there but still accepted and famous, tell me that it's alright to be myself.
Musically, Lorde specializes in the simple. Her songs consist of a straightforward beat, an easy melody (for this song, it's three chords), and her voice singing the lyrics (or other vocalizations). It's why she's categorized under pop some of the time because a lot of pop music follow this same formula, but Lorde is definitely not your run-of-the-mill pop star, so technically she's alternative.
A critique I have of her style, this song and the album is that it all sounds like a demo. I know she's new to the scene and that her watered down, almost stark, songs are her trademark, but I'd like to see more thought in her songwriting process. I want to see her adding more instrumentation, putting more thought in the arrangement of her albums, and grow lyrically and vocally. I want to see her progression, because she's got so much potential. I'm so excited for her career!

I hope you guys like this song choice and keep coming back on Thursdays to read more of my thoughts on popular alternative music!
Sorry guys, no live video because I love the girl, but her dancing on stage kind of scares me. It's also because I couldn't find a really good quality one, but mostly for the dancing/seizure thing. Anyway, lyrics below!
Lyrics:
That slow burn wait while it gets dark,
bruising the sun.
I feel grown up with you in your car,
I know it's dumb.
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
We've both got a million bad habits to kick,
not sleeping is one.
We're biting our nails, you're biting my lip,
I'm biting my tongue.
ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
People are talking, people are talking
(ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh)
People are talking, people are talking
Raise a glass, 'cause I'm not done saying it.
They all wanna get rough, get away with it.
Let 'em talk 'cause we're dancing in this world alone,
world alone, we're all alone.
All my fake friends and all of their noise,
complain about work
They're studying business, I study the floor,
and you haven't stopped smoking all night.
Maybe the Internet raised us,
or maybe people are jerks.
(People are talking, people are talking) But not you(People are talking, people are talking)
Raise a glass, 'cause I'm not done saying it.
They all wanna get rough, get away with it.
Let 'em talk 'cause we're dancing in this world alone,
world alone, we're all alone.
All the double-edged people and schemes.
They make a mess then go home and get clean.
You're my best friend, and we're dancing in a world alone,
a world alone, we're all alone.
I know we're not everlasting
We're a train wreck waiting to happen
One day the blood won't flow so gladly
One day we'll all get still
(people are talking, people are talking)
(people are talking, people are talking)
Get still
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
People are talking, people are talking (ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh)
People are talking, people are talking
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
People are talking, people are talking (ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh)
People are talking, people are talking
Raise a glass, 'cause I'm not done saying it
They all wanna get rough, get away with it.
Let 'em talk 'cause we're dancing in this world alone,
world alone, we're all alone.
All the double-edged people and schemes.
They make a mess then go home and get clean.
You're my best friend and we're dancing in a world alone,
a world alone, we're all alone.
People are talking, people are talking
People are talking, people are talking
People are talking, people are talking
People are talking, people are talking
Let 'em talk
