Hey guys, Lia here with a cover of "Breezeblocks" by Alt-J. First of all, I adore Alt-J. They're a bit out there and kind of hard to understand, but they write such poetic music, I can't help but love them! I also totally respect how they make complex seem simple, which is so hard to do well. Anyway, this song is about an unhealthy, obsessive kind of love that threatens to trap and engulf. It's also based on a quote from Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are: “Oh, please don't go—we'll eat you up—we love you so!” I tried to keep that dreamy quality of the song and not to make it sound too sad because, contrary to some interpretations, I don't think it's such a sad, manic-depressive song. I think it's about love and wanting desperately for a relationship to work because of the happy moments and not letting the sad, abusive moments overwhelm the love that two people feel for each other. Of course, I don't condone abusive relationships, but this song isn't about communicating an opinion, it's about telling a story.
Sorry, rant over. Anyway, my voice gets a bit (a lot) out of tune so I hope no one's too put off. I also may have had too much fun (!) with harmonizing. But please, I implore you to check out this band and watch the music video because it's great!
