"Love Is an Open Door" by Kristen Bell and Santino Fontana

When Hans an Anna first meet in Disney's Frozen

Hello everybody!  This is Kimberly for my first post for the genre Childrens Music.

If “Let It Go” is the beautiful bride that gets all the attention at a wedding (deservedly so), “Love Is an Open Door” is the quirky maid of honor that doesn’t get as much attention but is worth noticing.  “Love Is an Open Door” is the third song that appears in Disney’s Frozen and is one of several original songs that the husband-wife pair of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez composed for the movie.  They met at a musical theater writing workshop in Manhattan.  Since meeting each other, they have had success both individually and together composing music for shows that include Finding Nemo: the Musical and The Book of Mormon.

For those who are also fans of The Book of Mormon, you know that The Book of Mormon is filled with catchy tunes and witty lyrics, which is not unlike “Love is An Open Door.”   In a sense, although Frozen is a quote on quote “kids movie” the song lyrics are so clever that teenagers and parents alike will be kept entertained.  I don’t want to give away too much about the cinematic context surrounding “Love is An Open Door” for those who haven’t watched Frozen yet, but I will say that it’s a duet featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Santino Fontana.  What grabbed my attention me while watching the movie was the clever lyrics.  Who wouldn’t love a song that rhymes “mental synchronization” with “have but one explanation,”?  Also for those who are fans of Arrested Development there is a reference (albeit an unintentional one) to the line “Finish each other’s sandwiches.”  Along with the lyrics, listeners will enjoy the harmonies that Bell and Fontana do throughout the song especially with the title line of “Love Is an Open Door.”  The only reason why I’m not giving this song the full five records is that the chorus may bother some who are looking for a variation in lyrics during the chorus (the entire chorus is a repetition of the song’s title.)  However, all in all “Love Is an Open Door” is a humorous song that ties in the movie quite well.

To sum up, although “Love Is an Open Door” isn’t as yell-in-the-car-at-the-top-of-your-lungs worthy as “Let It Go,” it sure is more than just another bridesmaid.

Below is a lyric video for “Love is an Open Door” (You can fully appreciate the clever lyrics this way. J)
