"Mykonos" by Fleet Foxes

Fleet Foxes

Hey there, readers! Happy Tuesday! It's Lindsey here writing about indie music yet again.

This week's song has been in my music library since April of 2013, but I just only rediscovered it last week. While doing some hardcore studying for an economics test, I stumbled across this beautiful, folky piece of music. Throughout the week, I had the chorus repeating over and over in my head and found myself humming the melody while doing homework and even singing to it in the shower (which isn't a good thing consider I live in a dorm and share a bathroom with a dozen other girls). And because of my newfound love for this song, I am also developing a love for this band that I didn't have prior to last week.

Fleet Foxes formed in Seattle, Washington. In the beginning, they called themselves The Pineapples but changed to Fleet Foxes due to a clash with another local band. They started gaining popularity in 2006 when the Seattle Times took notice of the band. With their newfound popularity, they sat down to start work on their first album in 2007, and it was finally released in 2008, titled "Fleet Foxes." This particular song ("Mykonos") comes from their Sun Giant EP, released in 2008 before the official release of their first album. Both their album and EP received high ratings from the likes of Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, which added to their growing popularity among indie fans. Overall, this band may seem like a typical indie folk band, but they have something special in their music that sets them apart from the others, whether it be the lyrics, the sound, etc. I am excited to further explore their music in the future!

Also, for reference, here is a picture of Mykonos, Greece. At first, I did not know what Mykonos was (apprently, my knowledge of geography es no bueno), but then I learned it was a place and BAM! The song lyrics made sense.

Lyrics:
The door slammed loud and rose up a cloud of dust
on us
Footsteps follow, down through the hollow sound
torn up

And you will go to Mykonos
With a vision of a gentle coast
And a sun to maybe dissipate
Shadows of the mess you've made

How did animals in the snow tipped pines
I find
Hatching from the seed of your thin mind
all night

And you will go to Mykonos
With a vision of a gentle coast
And a sun to maybe dissipate
Shadows of the mess you've made

Brother, you don't need to turn me away
I was waiting down at the ancient gate

You go
Wherever you go today
You go today

I remember how they took you down
As the winter turned the meadow brown

You go
Wherever you go today
You go today

When a-walking, brother, don't you forget
It ain't often that you'll ever find a friend

You go
Wherever you go today
You go today
