"Team" Lorde Cover by Alex G and RUNAGROUND

Hello there, JUKEBOXERS!! I have returned once again for your weekly Wednesday review. This week's cover artists are Alex G and RUNAGROUND. I'm really excited for you to listen to this cover because I think it did this song justice. What song did they cover? As you can see in the title of this post, they covered "Team" by Lorde.

Before I begin going on and on about their cover, allow me to introduce these two artists. Ladies first, so I'll start with Alex G. She grew up in Denver, Colorado. As a child, fell in love with show tunes old shows like I Love Lucy. Alex was a dancer for nine years, but got tired of dance and played softball instead. In the summer before she started college, she quit softball and was immersed in the wonderful world of music. Alex began singing covers because her (at the time) boyfriend's sister was the type of person to sing for anyone, and she wanted people to know she could sing too. She posted videos on YouTube and Facebook, and got a request to do a song by Tyler Ward and Julia Sheer. She looked them up and fell in love with them. One day, she was told to enter a contest to fly to Denver and do a collab with Tyler Ward and before the contest was over, Tyler messaged her to do a collab even if she didn't win. As it turns out, they lived only a few minutes away from each other. Tyler helped her launch her music career, and they've even been on tour together. Alex is so grateful to Tyler for teaching her everything she knows.

RUNAGROUND, or Andy Kirk, has been making music and doing shows all over the country for ten years. He has just recently begun uploading his music to YouTube. He is thankful for all of his fans, whom he calls "#RAGDOLLS". He chose the stage name "RUNAGROUND" because of his grandfather, who was in the navy during World War II. His grandfather says his ship "ran aground" on the coast of Leyte in the Philippines and didn't make it to the battle they were supposed to fight. However, his grandfather says that saved his life because that battle most probably would have been lost, and they would have died. Andy chose "RUNAGROUND" because "sometimes the ship runs aground, and sometimes there's a reason".

Sorry for the long introduction. On to what I think about this cover! I totally love this cover. First, because they made it theirs, which is what a good cover artist should do. Secondly, the way they harmonize with each other is just beautiful. Harmonization is a great way to add depth to a song, and I think they did this perfectly. Lastly, and most importantly, because they were able to strip it bare from it's what some may call "over-produced" state. I love Lorde (probably not as much as Lia), but I would like to hear more of her vocal abilities, than the capabilities of her producers, and this cover allows the listener to hear these artists' vocalization. Alex and RUNAGROUND compliment each other perfectly in this cover while highlighting each others' voices.

Here is their cover.

And for my usual second video, I decided to post an Alex G collab with Peter Hollens. Just because I LOVE disney. I hope you enjoy this a cappella Disney Medley.
