Alex Goot being awesome and taking a picture with a stuffed elephant!!
Hello!! And welcome to another Wednesday review from Jewel :). This week, I'm reviewing Alex Goot's cover of "Unconditionally" by Katy Perry.
New York is home to many people and artists, including Alex Goot, or Alexander George Gut. A singer-songwriter, "multi-instrumentalist", and YouTube star, Goot's channel GootMusic has over a million subscribers. His musical career began at the age of 16, and since then he has gained popularity on multiple social networking sites. In addition, he has his own website, GootMusic.com, from which he releases music, news, and updates. Most of the time, he's self-producing audio and video in his home studio, or touring. In Your Atmosphere, Goot's first studio album was made possible by fans through a KickStarter campaign.
I've just got to say that Alex Goot has one of those instantly recognizable voices. His voice is definitely unique and most certainly beautiful. This cover of Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" is awesome. The first fifteen seconds made me doubt how great this cover would be, but as he adds layer after layer of sound, he makes the cover explosive. The beginning is just him and his piano, then you've got some basic drums, and all of sudden a burst of sound that advances the cover from solemnity to an electric vibe. His voice and the entire cover are actually in sync with the lyrics of the song. I mean, he keeps the initial sound yet it sounds like this song could be an Alex Goot original. That is the one quality I personally look for in covers, not necessarily that it sounds like the original, but that the cover artist makes it their own because it's easy to imitate, it's hard to create. What's even more amazing is the fact that he plays every instrument featured in the accompanying video. I don't know about you, but I'm jealous.
