"Closer, Faster" Original Song by Against the Current

Against the Current (left to right): Dan Gow, Chrissy Costanza, and Will Ferri

Welcome back, JUKEBOXERS!! It's Jewel with another ORIGINAL song from one of the cover artists I've written about before... Against the Current!! For the second post in my "Original Song Series" I've chosen "Closer, Faster" which was recently re-uploaded (or so I've been told by the comments) to YouTube. Click here to read about ATC in my review on their cover of "All Too Well" by Taylor Swift.

Let's begin with the vocals, since that's what I specialize in... It is undeniably true that Chrissy has a unique voice that is both feminine and full of power. This combination gives me a shade of green that can only come from envy. It's no wonder every Wednesday I see her face all over my twitter feed as people's #wcw (#WomenCrushWednesday). However, I'm going to have to give the vocals a 3 because, while I can hear the power in her voice, I can also hear some obvious effects. I know all singers must add some effects because, well, let's face it, we're just perfectionists when it comes to our voices, but, there's too much here, in my opinion (I'm not talking about the effect that's supposed to be a creative expression and part of the song, I actually enjoy that). Those of you who have read my previous posts know that personally, I prefer raw, natural sounds. I understand no one can hit every single note every single time, so I appreciate the imperfections. I know I just said I don't like all the effects on her voice, but some of them, specifically the ones like the line "take me to your happily ever after" go great with this song. I also enjoyed the background harmony and "oh-oh"s.

Overall, I like the sound of this song, it's a fabulous blend of pop, punk, and rock. The guitar and drums aren't too complicated, at least they don't sound very difficult. Of course, I could be wrong about that since I don't play either of those instruments. Even in all its simplicity, the instruments that accompany Chrissy's voice are a perfect compliment to the intensity of her compelling vocals.

Last, but definitely not least, the lyrics. I pretty much applaud all lyrics that meet three expectations. First and foremost, they absolutely have to make sense, unless of course that's the artist's style. Secondly, lyrics cannot be totally repetitive, I'm talking about a chorus that's sung twice every time the chorus is sung; in a typical song, that would be 6-10 times. Lastly, I no longer appreciate songs that rhyme "fire" with "desire" because that's been overdone (I may be exaggerating, but seriously, listen for it... it's everywhere). BONUS: I love it when songs tell a complete story, from beginning to end or have a super deep meaning. Now that you know my lyrical expectations, I'll share my opinion on the lyrics of this song. While "Closer, Faster" is just about love, or most likely, love, and is really catchy, and I wouldn't mind hearing it all day, it meets all three of my expectations for lyrics. However, it doesn't have a deeper meaning or a complete storyline, so I'm going to have to give the lyrics a 4 rating. I'll get to what I mean by "deeper meaning" and "complete storyline" in another review sometime in the future.

Here is "Closer, Faster":

Even though the video is a lyric video, I thought I'd add the lyrics below.

When it gets dark we're falling far tonight

Under the moonlight chasing fireflies
If I'd ask you, "do you think you want to?"
Just say yes without feeling like you got to
It's the way that you looked at me
That night
When the butterflies
They came to life
By your side

So won't you pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after
Boy don't make me wait forever
Oh-oh
You know we'd be so much better
If we could fall in love together
Pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after

You lift me up take my feet off the ground
With just one look it's like you've got me now
Left me speechless, didn't know I'd feel this
Just say yes, boy you know that we could do this
I'm the one you've been dreaming of
And that's why
The butterflies
They come to life
Every time

So won't you pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after
Boy don't make me wait forever
Oh-oh
You know we'd be so much better
If we could fall in love together
Pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after

It's in the sound of your voice
You've got me caught up in your eyes
And under all the stars
Can you feel the butterflies?
And even at the summer's end
You left with all your promises
I still remember when you said
We could make it last

So won't you pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after
Boy don't make me wait forever
Oh-oh
You know we'd be so much better
If we could fall in love together
Pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after

So won't you pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after
Boy don't make me wait forever
Oh-oh
Pull me closer, kiss me faster
(Boy don't make me wait forever)
Pull me closer, kiss me faster
Take me to your happily ever after

Rating: 4 RECORDS
