"Everything Will Change" Gavin DeGraw Cover by Anthem Lights

The boys, I mean, men, of Anthem Lights

Hey there, JUKEBOXERS!! Jewel here for another weekly review on a cover artist!! This week, I'll be reviewing a cover by Anthem Lights.

Let's begin with some information about this handsome group of men. What I love about these four men is the fact that they are very open about their faith. They inspire "misfits of any age", especially adolescents who struggle to find a place in this world. The following is a quote from one of the members, Alan Powell.

"As followers of Christ, we were not made for this world. We don't belong here. and all the self-doubt and insecurity and struggling to fit in, it's all part of believing the lie that we're supposed to be 'at home' here. God created us in His image — there's nothing to doubt about that! We're here to love others and be Christ in the world. The closer we get to Christ, to being what we were created to be in this world, our value of what this world values begins to fade."

Anthem Lights started in the Fall of 2007, when Alan Powell and Chad Graham, both living in LA at the time, got together and wrote songs for Graham's solo career. The more they wrote, the stronger the vision of a group singing their harmonic songs became. In a few days, Caleb Grimm and Kyle Kupecky, two other students from Liberty University, joined the group. Anthem Lights signed with Reunion Records in a matter of a few months. Then, the group started their self-titled album. Their focus is not only to make good music, but "to build people up". With influences like Michael Jackson, tobyMac, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, and dcTalk, Anthem Lights has added their own unique pop sound in the music industry. However, as Kyle Kupecky states, it's not the sound, but the message behind it that inspires. They aren't doing this for glory or money, they're doing this because they wish to spread the Light, even if that means some won't listen.

The song they chose to cover is a reflection of their beliefs and sends a message that "everything will change". I like how they even choose to cover songs that inspire. And just so you can, not only hear the inspiring message, but see it, I will post the lyrics along with one of my favorite mash-ups by Anthem Lights below their cover. Now on to the actual cover...

Anthem Lights has a certain sound that, as mentioned earlier, comes from various influences, and I for one appreciate their sound. The way they did the introduction was a simple voice and piano duet. If you've been reading my reviews, you know I like it when the cover artist keeps a raw sound. As the song continues, they take turns singing while adding instruments. While this seems so simple, I find it suits the song, their style, and their voices. And when they get to the chorus, it builds up to all their voices singing in essentially perfect harmony, accompanied by all the instruments. As an Anthem Lights fan, I instantly distinguished their unique sound while listening to this cover.  Another thing those of you who have been reading my posts know about me by now is the fact that I absolutely adore artists who can own a song while maintaining its original sound, so it's recognizable, and that's exactly what Anthem Lights has accomplished in this cover.

Here's the cover:

Here are the lyrics to Gavin DeGraw's "Everything Will Change":

Take those boots off your shelf
Wipe that dust off yourself
Even if you’ve been through hell, you're back
It’s time to separate the men from the boys
And the women from the girls
And the tools from the toys
Even if you’re freaking out, just relax

Hey, before it gets too late
Before the night is over, before the world’s awake
Everything will change
Hey, I feel it coming on
Starting like a fire, tonight you lit the flame
Now everything will change

Back when it used to hurt
Took you a little while just to find the words
Losing, well, it sometimes burns, but you keep moving on
You’ve got to push on like you’re leading the nation
Got to make the best out of this situation
Get your hands up like it’s a celebration
And you keep moving on

Singing hey, before it gets too late
Before the night is over, before the world’s awake
Everything will change
Hey, I feel it coming on
Starting like a fire, tonight you lit the flame
Now everything will change
(ooooooh)
Now everything will change
(ooooooh)
Everything will change
(ooooooh)
Everything will change
(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)

Take those boots off the shelf
Wipe that dust of yourself
Even if you’ve been through hell, you’re back
Hey, before it gets too late
Before the night is over, before the world’s awake
Everything will change
Hey, I feel it coming on
Starting like a fire, tonight you lit the flame
Now everything will change

(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)
It’ll change
(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)
(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)
But you won't know if you don’t try
(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)
It’ll change
(ooooooh)
(you can talk the talk-talk, but you can’t walk the walk-walk)

And here is one of my favorite mash-ups by Anthem Lights.
